Kuusi Oscar-ehdokkuutta haalinut Boyhood oli viime vuoden kehutuimpia elokuvia, mutta elokuva sisälsi myös yhden aivan timanttisen ja toteuttamiskelpoisen idean. Eräässä elokuvan kohtauksessa Ethan Hawken esittämä isä antaa pojalleen lahjaksi itse koostetun levyn, jota hän kutsuu The Beatlesin ”The Black Albumiksi”.
”The Black Album” on leffan mukaan levy, joka koostetaan The Beatlesin jäsenten myöhemmästä soolotuotannosta, ja leffassa mainitaankin kappaleiden kulkevan Paul McCartney & The Wingsin Band on the Runista Ringo Starrin Photographin kautta aina George Harrisonin All Things Must Passiin.
The Black Album on siis albumi, jonka The Beatles ”olisi tehnyt”, jos olisi pysynyt yhdessä. Tai ainakin sen musiikillinen mosaiikki paljastaa, miltä yhtyeen myöhemmät levyt olisivat voineet kuulostaa.
Leffassa albumin käsittely jää tähän, mutta myöhemmin ohjaaja Richard Linklaterilta ryhdyttiin pyytämään täyttä biisilistaa albumille. The Dissolven mukaan Linklater paljasti, että idea on näyttelijä Ethan Hawken käsialaa ja Hawke on itseasiassa koostanut The Black Albumin alunperin omalle tyttärelleen Mayalle.
Kaikeksi onneksi myös itse biisilista on saapunut keskuuteemme Buzzfeedin välityksellä, joten nyt kuka tahansa voi koostaa oman The Black Album -soittolistansa. Tällainen on siis Ethan Hawken visio The Beatlesin toteutumattomasta kolmoisalbumista.
Linklater on muuten keskustellut myös mahdollisuudesta julkaista albumi jossain muodossa, mutta moinen vaatisi tietysti kädenvääntöä musiikin julkaisuoikeuksien kanssa, eivätkä elossa olevat beatletkaan välttämättä suhtautuisi ajatukseen lämpimästi.
